ETS has announced major changes to GRE in 2011.
The following changes will take place in 2011:
1. More questions on reading comprehension will be added.
2. Analogies and antonyms will be removed from the test.
3. The scoring range for each section will be 130-170, with score increments of one point instead of 200-800 (with score increments of 10 points).
4. GRE test takers will be allowed to use calculators issued by ETS.
5. Unlike the current scenario where the test taker can not skip any question, the new format allow test takers to skip questions and come back to them later and review answers before submitting an entire section.
6. More questions on data analysis will be added.
Can i know more about data analysis as how to how many questions would be added ?
Are there also changes in the marking pattern or would it remain the same ?
What would be added instead of Analogies and Antonyms ? Data Analysis is a different set of Questions right !
I want more information about data analysis. How many questions do they ask in that section ?
What about marking system - Does it remains the same or Has the marking system changed ?
GRE is going to loss its tradition, resque from antonym and analogy, its great..use of calculator is an wide thinking of test takers

Hi Ghanish
In case you have any query about GRE, feel free to ask. You can create a new discussion or write your query in any existing discussion.
We will be glad to help you.
Good Luck!
hii ……wll is it best to take up the old pattern or the new one?……..im totally confusd??pls do reply
The new pattern when implemented will not require you to memorize word lists. It will focus more on reading comprehension skills. To score high in new pattern, you need to have good reasoning skills.
So, I would say that the new pattern will be beneficial to prospective applicants.
When do you plan to take GRE?
Thanks
Hi…!! I'll be completing my bachelor's degree by the month of May
2011…would it be better for me to take the exam the same year or in
2012 after having an idea about the new question paper….?? and are
you sure that there is no necessity to memorize word lists….??
Revised GRE General Test from August
1, 2011
ETS announced revised GRE Exam format few months back. Students who were
planning to take GRE in mid 2011 now have
to make a decision. Many students will try to take GRE Exam before the revised GRE exam goes into effect on August 1, 2011
There are few important milestones you need to take into account if
you are going to take revised GRE test.
There will be delay in GRE Scores
reporting to Universities.
Revised GRE 2011 â€" Dates
MONTH MILESTONE
2010
JULY • Free test prep available to test
takers
2011
AUGUST â€"
SEPTEMBER • August 1: First day of
testing for revised test
• For tests administered in Augustâ€"September, scores will be
reported in early November
OCTOBER • For tests administered in
October, scores will be reported in mid-November
NOVEMBER • For tests administered early
to mid-November, scores will be reported in late November
• Late November: Score reporting returns to the regular reporting
period (10â€"15 days after test date)
In current test format, it takes about 2 to 3 weeks to report the
scores. But, from August to November 2011 there will be delay in
score reporting. If you have deadlines then plan accordingly.
Most likely universities will be flexible to GRE Score deadlines during that time frame, since
ETS is making major changes and that have
announced about the revised GRE Score
reporting well in advance.
New GRE Exam 2011
ETS had announced Major New GRE Exam Format from 2011. So, there were many
question from students about new GRE Exam
pattern. Students planning to take GRE in
2011 are the ones who will be in confusion on which format to
take.
The first administration of the GRE
revised General Test will be in August 2011. You can find
FREE test prep materials beginning July
2010 to help you prepare in ETS
GRE Website.
Until sample questions are posted, it’s hard to predict which
GRE format at will be good over the
other.
So, keep studying for current GRE Format
and after July, you can decide which exam to take. Most likely
students will be hesitant to take New GRE
format in 2011 without hearing some inputs from test takers.
Number of test takers appearing for GRE
in Month of August 2011 will be very less. Many will wait for
someone to take the exam and then then go for it.
What would you do, if are planning to take GRE in 2011?
New GRE 2011 Scoring
By HSB On March 28, 2010; 5
ETS announced changes to GRE Exam from August 2011. Exam pattern, syllabus,
format will change in revised GRE. One of
the important changes in the new GRE is
the scoring scale.
New GRE 2011 â€" Scores
Within the new GRE score scale, the most
important change is the in the scoring system. Current day
GRE has 10-point increments and new
pattern will have to 1-point increments. According to ETS â€" the purpose for compressing the reporting
metric is simple: to produce scores that don’t exaggerate small
performance differences between examinees.
The new score scale for the GRE revised
General Test:
• GRE Verbal: 130â€"170 score scale, in
1-point increments (current GRE pattern
200â€"800 in 10-point increments).
• GRE Quantitative: 130â€"170 score
scale, in 1-point increments (current GRE
Pattern 200â€"800 in 10-point increments).
• Analytical Writing will continue to be reported on the same
0â€"6 score scale, in half-point increments.
Impact on Admission with New GRE 2011
Differentiation among those who have earned a particular
GRE score on the new scale will be
difficult, and should put extra emphasis on other differentiating
components of applications, such as essays and letters of
recommendation.
Possible GRE Scores
• Possible scores is spread out to 41 (170 â€" 130)
• Current GRE is 71 ( 200 to 800)
Same number of GRE test takers will fall
under 41 scores than 71. Which means, its hard to differentiate
applicants based on score. You need to have strong application to
get admission. Which indirectly creates another admission
requirement
• If minimum score is 140, then candidates with 135 might not get
admission. In current format, if minimum required GRE is 1100, students will 1000 will have possibility
to get admission.
If you are planning to take GRE exam from
August 2011, you have to consider all advantages and dis-advantages
of new GRE 2011 pattern. Decide well in
advance and book GRE Test dates for 2011.
Many students will try to take GRE in
current format, so you will not find dates to take exam if you wait
till last minute.
I have completed my b.tech 2nd year….i am planning to take gre
coaching in these holidays and give the exam before the pattern
changes. so is it better to give the exam now or should i wait for
the new pattern….n take coaching.and which pattern has got the
scope of scoring high.
im totally confused…. please do reply…!!
Hey,
GRE test is conducted all round the year and there are no particular GRE test dates. You can opt for any GRE test dates according to his convenience and he also has the freedom to choose the GRE test center as well as the time which suits you the best.
As the GRE tests are conducted in most cities across the world, the candidate can select any city that suits you. As such there’s no pre-requisite of qualification or age limit imposed upon the candidate. The GRE scores are valid up to five years from the date of issue of the GRE score, no matter what was the format earlier and in the current situation so the point is that it’ll definitely be valid for 5 years as soon as you have received the scores.
Though GRE can be given anytime of the
year but the best times to write GRE is
during August-October and apply for fall (August/September)
session.
As a counselor I would suggest you that you should at least spend
around 3 months to prepare for the exam and this is the perfect
time to start preparing for GRE so that
when you appear for the test in October, you are well prepared.
For preparation of GRE exams you can join our GRE community and there you can take up practice tests free of cost and as well as you can take help of our expert by simply writing to them. So try to make most of it.
Best of Luck!!

Dear Counsellors,
i am just going through my 3rd year, 2nd term for a 4 year BSc in
Mechanical Engineering course. I will be finishing my 4th year
around January 2012. by that time the admission for fall 2012 will
be over. so i want to apply after i complete my 4th year 1st term
results. is that possible ? i heard there is a provision for
conditional application - i apply with myh current results and by
the time i graduate i have to maintain a certain gpa. can any one
elaborate on this ? it will be very helpful.
also i have seen that toefl is very important in some us
universities. i also heard that the new gre syllabus would
incorporate toefl, i.e, the students would only need to give gre
and not toefl under the new gre system. is this information
verified ?
Thank you all.
Hello,
Planning to take a GRE in the third year of your Bachelors is a good decision since the scores are valid for 5 years. However, I feel one should be able to devote more time for the preparation. There have been candidates who have prepared for the test in a couple of months and have earned a good score, I would still suggest you to give more time. Good coaching institutes give you the catch to crack down the questions. Remember you are learning less and practicing more!
You still have two more years so make the best of it!
Good luck!

i am in the start of my 3rd year(Vth sem, ie i'll be completing my
B.tech in May,2012). I am preparing for GRE and i m planing to give it in September end or
October first week. Someone quoted above that one shoudn't keep
GRE scores older than 2 years. Wat wud u
suggest in my case?Shud i wait for another year to give
GRE or shud i give it a go as i
hav planned?
Hello,
The GRE scores are valid for period of 5 years. However, at times universities d recommend to re-take GRE if they are past 3 years.
As per the information provided, you would be opting for a Masters degree abroad (US) for Fall 2012 and by then your scores would not be over two years. If you are well prepared and confident to take the test, I would suggest that you take the test.
