The number of institutions signing in to use TOEFL scores continue to increase at a fast pace. An additional 383 institutions have become TOEFL score users within the last year. Globally, around a million students appear for the test every year. The TOEFl test has been accepted by the top ranking universities around the world for the last 45 years.
Educational Testing Service, the creators of the test, announced that the English language proficiency test for both undergraduate and graduate applicants has now been accepted by 7,300 institutes across the world, making it one of the most widely accepted tests.
The Toefl test is accepted at 5,175 institutes in United States and Canada 1,000 in Europe, 600 in Asia and 200 in the United Kingdom . Institutes in Australia and New Zealand have also joined the bandwagon.
“Every student planning to study abroad takes either GRE or Toefl. For Indians, where one in every 25 student heads abroad, this is great news,” said Palav Sharma, counselor.
“As the number of institutions accepting the Toefl test is rising rapidly, we have opened additional testing centres in India and abroad,” said Teresa Sanchez-Lazer, executive director, Toefl product management. Currently there are more than 4500 test administration sites globally.

In response to a question about how can one offset for a lower score in GMAT, international student at Columbia University says “From my perspective as a student, the admissions committee looks at you as a whole. If your academic credentials are not as strong, you can try to differentiate yourself with other things. For instance, have you ever done something unique and challenging in your life? Some of my classmates focused their applications on personal achievements. There was my friend who climbed Mount Everest, and some others participated in the Peace Corps in Africa. Try to find something unique in you, and communicate it in your application.”

This information includes the types of questions you answered right and wrong, the difficulty level of each question, and the time spent on each question. This service will be available to you for six months following the receipt of your score report.

Prosecutors say there are at least six common scams students should watch out for – fake scholarship promises, dodgy student loans, untrustworthy counselors, illegal downloads, diploma mills, and term paper and other cheating supplies.
The Chronicle of Higher Education has reported on an apparently bogus collections agency that sent out letters to Bucknell students demanding US$500 to settle the students’ alleged illegal downloads.

The new UK visa regulations are transparent and definitely a stringent measure to check fake documents and to permit genuine students to continue studies abroad.
L Dhanasekaran, Head, Education UK-South India, British Council said, “In most cases, students would have produced fake documents making way for the rejection of visa application. However, when students reapply for visa, their doubts can be clarified in the administrative review. And even after this procedure, if the visa application is rejected again, a 10-year ban would be imposed on the candidates,” Dhanasekaran explained.
According to the new rules, students aspiring to work in UK and not to study would be deterred and the regulations would also keep a check on the fake colleges from conning international students. Students are worried as the dates of admission to universities can not be extended due to delay in the visa approval.
At the USA Education Fair organized in association with the Times of India, Michelle Wildman, vice consul, US Consulate General gave a briefing on US visa procedure. She said: “Approximately 900 people come to us for visas every day. I have between 30 seconds and two minutes to decide how serious an applicant is about studying in the US. So, all the information that can tell us about your intent and credibility to pursue higher education in the US is welcome.”
Warning students against the use of fraudulent bank documents, Wildman said that applicants would have to produce financial documents to demonstrate that their families could support them in the first year of study without the candidates having to work.
