If you are planning for spring’09 then it’s better to give GRE by March’09 and get the test date registered one month in advance.

The above date mentioned is if you are planning for Dec 09/Jan 2010 session. If you are planning to apply for Jan 09 session then its high time and you should get yourself registered for gre at the earliest possible as most of the universities have application deadline in October.

You should plan to give your test at the earliest as for Fall’ 09, some universities have deadline in Dec. Though some universities have deadlines in Jan and Feb too. For dates , you should keep checking on regular basis as one might get available if someone opts out or cancel his/her appointment. No there’s no increase in difficulty level across centers.
