What are different types of student visa?
There are two categories of non-immigrant student visa for United States:
F visa: for pursuing academic studies and/or language training programs
M visa: for non-academic or vocational studies.

When can I apply for visa
Once you have received I-20 from the university, you may take a visa appointment , however student visa can be issued no more than 120 days prior to the course commencement date mentioned on your I-20.

What is I-20?
The university sends you I-20 once you are granted an admission. It is a legal document that entitles you to apply for a student visa at the US Consulate.

What documents do I need to carry on my Visa Appointment Day?
You will be required to carry the following documents:
  • Passport (valid for at least six months beyond your interview date.)
  • Visa application forms
  • HDFC Visa fee receipt
  • Interview Appointment letter
  • Proof of payment of SEVIS Fee Receipt I-901, if applicable.
  • 1 recent color photograph
  • I-20 issued by university
  • Acceptance Letter
  • TOEFL/GRE/GMAT Score Reports
  • Financial Documents
  • MarkSheets/ Degree Certificates of undergraduate course work

Is there any photo specification for visa applicant?
Yes, with an incorrect photograph your application will not be accepted. For details on photo specification check here.


How much funds do I need to show in my sponsor's account?
You should show sufficient liquid assets to pay for the entire first year of education and living expenses and provide evidence that funds will be available for all subsequent years.

What documents do I need to prepare to show the available funds?
Bank account statements, employment letters, Income Tax Return, chartered accountant statements, property documents are generally used to show proof of funds

When can I travel to US?

On a student visa, you may enter United States no more than 30 days before the start date of the course as mentioned in I-20.

Under What circumstance is visa denied?

The visa may be refused if visa officer is not convinced about your plans to return to home country after finishing off your studies.
