How to Register for GRE Exam

by Deepa Mittal

Ask The Experts

If you want to take admission in Spring semester then it is the right time when you can register yourself for GRE test dates. The test is available at 700 centers in more than 160 countries across the world. The test is offered as a computer-based test year round the year at most locations across the world and a paper-based test up to three times a year in areas where computer based testing is not available. It is always good that you should register early to get your preferred testing location and appointment time.

In August, 2011, the GRE revised General Test and replaced the old GRE General Test. The new design is test-taker friendly and new questions are added in the test. This new test reflects more closely the kind of thinking aspirants develop in graduate or business schools and demonstrate that you are ready for graduate-level work.

There are four ways to register for GRE (Computer Adaptive) Test :

1. Phone

For applicants in U.S, U.S territory and Canada:

You can call at 1-443-751-4820 or 1-800-GRE-CALL (1-800-473-2255) on weekdays between 8 a.m to 8 p.m.

For payment you can use either American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, VISA or a voucher number.

For applicants located at other locations:

Call the appropriate RRC (Regional Registration center). Click here to get list of RRC.

Mode of Payment: A valid credit card either American Express, JBC, Discover, MasterCard or VISA. Make sure to call at least two business days before the test date. You will receive the confirmation number and test center address after registration.

2. Online Registration:

For registering online you need to have or create a My GRE Account to register online.
Click on the following link to register online: http://ets.org/gre/grereg

Mode of Payment (Credit Card only)
You will require American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, VISA credit card.

The Online Registration facility is not available in Nigeria.

After registering online, you can check your appointment confirmation at https://securereg3.prometric.com/RescheduleOrCancel.aspx?mode=

3. Mail

For applicants in U.S, U.S territory and Canada:

Download the Computer Based Authorization Voucher Request Form.

Mail it to the following address along with the the payment:

ETS-CBT/GRE
Box 371859
Pittsburgh, PA 15250-7859

It may take around four weeks for processing. After you receive your authorization voucher, you can call to schedule your appointment. The appointment must be made before the expiration date given on voucher.

The preferred mode of payment is money order, certified check or personal check.

For applicants located at other locations:

Download the International Scheduling Form and mail it to the appropriate RRC. Make sure that the documents are received at least three weeks before the test date.

Click here to get list of RRC.

You can pay either through a credit card, money order or a certified check.

4. Fax

Fax registration is not available for test takers in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea

Download the International Scheduling Form and fax it to the appropriate RRC.
Click here to get list of RRC

The fax should be received at least seven days before the first test date.

Mode of Payment: American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard, VISA, or a voucher number.

When registering through Fax or mail, a confirmation number and test center address will be send to you. In case if it is not received call the appropriate RRC at least three business days before the test date.

To get more details on registering, click Register for GRE on http://www.gre.org. Most of the information here was taken from there. Click here to get GRE Bulletin.

Rescheduling or Canceling Test Appointment:

For applicants located outside U.S:
Contact the appropriate RRC at least three business days before the test date.

For applicants in U.S, U.S Territory or Canada:
Call 1-443-751-4820 or 1-800-GRE-CALL (1-800-473-2255) or the local center where you are scheduled to test at least three business days before the test date.

Important Points:

  1. Register early so that your scores are received before you want to apply in colleges.
  2. Make sure that while registering, the spellings of name matches with the one printed on the ID that you will present at the test center.
  3. Late registration is available if you register online. Late registration closes one week after the regular registration date.
  4. You can get list of test centers all over the world at https://etsis4.ets.org/tcenter/

    Hello,

Well, you are definitely late while considering the GRE test in January 2011, if you are considering Fall 2011 session. Also, please note the universities seek the actual test scores and not the projected scores not to grant admit but to even process the application. You may access the following links for tips and strategies to prepare for the tests :

    TOEFL
    GRE 2010

However, since you have not specified the interested program you can fill our School Finder Form-USA and our counseling team will get back to you at the earliest.

You may contact Rupal Malhotra, +91-9650002055, rupal.malhotra@learnhub.com. for further guidance.

Do get back to us in case of further queries.

    Take care!

    Hello,

If you are aiming for Fall 2011 (August 2011) session, you would be missing out most of the deadlines in December since majority of the universities have their deadlines during that time.

Though there are universities that accept applications beyond January as well, to be on the safer side, I would strongly recommend that if well prepared and confident of taking the test, you should register for the earliest dates available.

To further guide you with the GRE preparation, you may access the following link :

    Hi

Since you will be completing bpt in 2011, you can enroll for admission to Fall 2011. For admission to Fall 2011, you have ample time to prepare for GRE. I would recommend you to give the exam by Oct 2010.

Please go through the lesson on International Student Plan for admission

You can give the test in August but you will not be able to apply to some universities that have deadlines in July. However, you can apply to the universities whose deadlines extend beyond August.

    Hi,

Since you will pass out of your M.Sc in May 2010, you can apply for Fall (August) 2010. If you can complete your GRE by August/September you will have ample time to apply to the universities. Also, you stand a chance for scholarships and financial aids if you apply early.

Earlier students use to take GRE much in advance so that they can search for the universities that will meet their requirements and also get in touch with some of the students in those universities. But now here on Learnhub this daunting task is made simple with the aid of School Finder Tool using which you can access the information regarding some of the top colleges abroad that will fit in to your requirements.

Also, Learnhub has announced Scholarship for the benefit of the study abroad aspirants. Please apply to the Learnhub Dream Scholarship and if you win the scholarship that would be your first step towards reaching your goal.

    All the best
