International Student: Plan for Admission to US University

by Deepa Mittal

Event Calendar:Application Timeline for admissions to a US University

International Students need to meticulously plan out their application process to avoid missing any admissions deadlines for each university they apply to. Created below is a timeline map that will help you stematically plan for your admission, for the purposes of this examples we have picked a Fall 2009 start date:

June 08: Gather information pertaining to the GRE test and admissions procedure to each of the universities you are considering attending.

July-Sep 08: Start preparing for the GRE and TOEFL tests. Plan for the test date and get yourself registered for the test sometime in October.

October 08: Practice full length mock tests. Take the GRE and TOEFL Test.

Oct-Nov08: Start preparing SoP(Statement of Purpose), LoRs (Letter of Recommendations), academic transcripts and other documents to be send to the university. A good SoP is a great way to impress the admission committee members!

Nov 08-Jan 09: Create a shortlist of potential universities based on your test scores and send your prepared documents to each university you wish to apply to.

Wait for the results from the universities……..

May 09-June09: Once you have your acceptance letter, start preparing for the Visa application - make sure you have all your forms! Now is also the time start applying for Financial Aid.

June-July 09: Time for you US Visa internview - good luck! Gather information of the climate and culture of the place you are going to.

August 09: Try to arrive a bit before classes start to give yourself time to adjust to your new home. Check with the school (and your visa) to see how early you can arrive.

September 09: Courses Begin.

One way to look at your experience with college admissions is to wonder if there is something more you do not understand. I suggest taking a course in statistics and probability in college, and then reflect on your experience.

    Hello Abhishek,

Thanks for writing to Learnhub for your queries!

Your schedule for the test take is a little late. Because deadline start closing by November end with most of them closing by December end.

You can still catch up with the pace if you prepare your admission documents before hand. Also plan for Universities with application deadlines a little later.

Mid January is the time when Fall admissions close in US.

You need to plan your admissions process well so as to avoid missing upon application deadlines.

You can also consider availing Learnhub Counseling services. You will get full time assistance in your admission and application process. You can write to me at ankita.arora@learnhub.com for further information on the same.

    All the best!

I am a senior B. Tech student and will be graduating in May2012. I have planned to pursue research internships for about 4-6 month before applying to US/EU Universities. Can I apply for the Spring Semester (Jan/Feb 2013)? or Should I try for the next Fall semester?

    Hello,

The good news is that a good number of universities have come up with the acceptance of 15 years of formal education provided you meet with the other eligibility criteria and admission requirements.

A good score on the GMAT, TOEFL, reference letters from the professors and employers and a focused statement of purpose can definitely work out for you. Try and have an impressive resume` that displays a consistent growth in terms of work status and monetary benefits. In simple words, work out on the other aspects of the profile and consider universities that accept 15 years of education.

Do get back with more elaboration on your profile so that we can guide you further.

    Take care!

    Hello,

Please note, the GPA though an important aspect during the evaluation process of a profile is not the sole deciding factor. There have been acceptance with 60% but it would not be justified to say the acceptance was based on the criteria of grades alone.

Other factors like the GRE and TOEFL score, reference letters, statement of purpose, relevant projects, paper work, some kind of experience though not mandatory does make your profile stand out of the crowd.

Also, if you are aspiring for Fall 2011 session, if prepared and confident of taking the test you should give it by October, latest by November so that you have time in hand to proceed with other formalities of the admission procedure.

Additionally, please find below the link for more guidance on GRE :
