How does the GRE CAT Testing works ? (Discussion)

deepa mittal saidTue, 27 Oct 2009 07:27:22 -0000 ( Link )

GRE CAT Scoring is quite different from the traditional paper based test. Here is how it works:

The GRE CAT scoring is computer adaptive. Instead of having a predetermined mixture of easy, medium, and hard questions, the computer will select questions for you based on how well you are doing. The first question presented will be of medium difficulty . If you get it right, the second question will be selected from a large group of questions that are a little harder; if you get the first question wrong, the second will be a little easier. The result is that the test is self-adjusting and self-correcting to your skill level.

Also, the harder problems count more than easier ones, it is important that you mark the difficult questions right.

It is very important to spend more time on the first few questions and answer them correctly so that you have a chance to answer the more difficult questions that are worth more points.

If you have any query related to GRE scoring, feel free to post them here.

How much should I score to get into a good graduate school?

The average student scores around a 500 on both the GRE Verbal and Quantitative sections and a 4 on the Analytical Writing Section. A good score might be considered anything above 550 on the Verbal section and above 600 on the Quantitative section. However, what constitutes a good score varies by school and by program. You should target for a higher score to be admitted to a prestigious graduate program.

Also, programs in mathematics and sciences will place more emphasis on Quantitative scores, while Verbal section scores are more important for programs in the humanities. Research programs will place lot of emphasis on analytical score.

What if I take the GRE and mess up?

If you are not able to perform well in the exam, the only chance you get to cancel your score is immediately after you finish the exam but before you see your scores. After they have been reported to you, they cannot be canceled. If you cancel your scores, they cannot be reinstated; you will not be eligible for a refund.

Should I appear for GMAT or GRE ?

With many B-Schools beginning to accept either scores for admission, many students are in dilemma whether to take GRE or GMAT.

Though GRE vs. GMAT score comparison is difficult, but in general the GMAT is the harder exam. Put side-by-side, the GMAT math and reading comprehension questions are more difficult for the comparable skill level. GMAT Quant is well known for its Data Sufficiency Questions. These questions don’t seem to be tough but most of the test takers end up giving wrong answers. International students may find the GRE harder because of the vocabulary required. The question of GMAT or GRE will probably be determined by the requirements of the graduate programs.

Go through the structure of both the exams and figure out which one is best suited for you depending on your skills.
